History:

-Just a warning that the below history contains massive spoilers for the Age of Ultron film-

Wanda, and her twin brother Pietro, Maximoff lost their parents at a very early age. They are natives to Sokovia, an eastern European country that borders Russia. Sokovia has experienced several years of violent conflict, and, as a result, many innocent civilians have lost their lives in the random artillery shellings of the city. Wanda and Pietro’s parents were two such victims. They were gathered around the family dinner table when the first shell hit their apartment building, blowing a large hole in their floor. Both Maximoff parents went into the hole, killed in the collapsing building’s debris. Pietro grabbed his sister, and together they took shelter under their parents’ bed. The second shell hits their building, and lands only three feet away from where the Maximoff children are taking cover. The shell does not go off, but instead sits there right in front of their faces. The word “STARK” printed along its side. As rescue efforts begin, the twins lie in wait for three days, expecting the rescue efforts to set the explosive off at any second. Instead, the two twins are pulled safely from the rubble of their building; however, a newly imbued hatred for Tony Stark has found its way into their hearts and minds.

Some years later, the twins volunteer for some human experimentation efforts being orchestrated by Baron Strucker. They willingly subject themselves to roughly two years of cruel experimentation, believing that their survival will reward them with the ability to destroy Tony Stark. Sure enough, the twins are the only survivors of Strucker’s human experiments, and unique powers manifest from the twins. Wanda’s brother, Pietro, gains the ability of super speed. Wanda gains several powers involving the mental energy and manipulation. Together, the duo train themselves to control their abilities, preparing for the day when they can enact their vengeance upon Tony Stark.

Their patience and training would pay off when the Avengers finally arrive to assault Strucker’s Hydra compound in Sokovia. Against Baron Strucker’s orders, the twins head out to face the Avengers and test their abilities against “Earth’s Mightiest Protectors.” Their initial clash with the Avengers was brief, but each proved capable of taking on a few of the Avengers. Wanda herself successfully surprised both Captain America and Tony Stark; only Steve Rogers was able to detect her presence after her telekinetic sneak attack. Through Stark’s fear, Wanda received a vision of the full power of the alien, Chitari race that Stark had witnessed briefly after passing through the portal in New York city. Wanda allowed Stark to take the scepter, believing that his vision and fear would drive him towards self-destruction.

A few days later, the Maximoff twins were contacted by a stranger, asking them to meet him at the chapel in the center of Sokovia. Wanda’s attempts to read the stranger’s mind proved unsuccessful, putting her on guard. The stranger revealed himself to be Ultron, a new AI entity, seeking to end Tony Stark and the rest of the Avengers. The Maximoff twins recognized that they shared a common enemy with Ultron, who appeared sympathetic to their background and the death of their parents. Thus, they agreed to help him in his quest to bring about the end of the Avengers.

Ultron provided the twins with their next chance to face off against the Avengers in a south African salvage yard. With the help of Ultron’s many bodies, the twins proved to be more than a match for the Avengers. Wanda managed to ensnare Black Widow, Captain America, Thor, and even Bruce Banner in visions of fear, rendering the first three incapable of continuing the fight and causing Banner to change into the Hulk, who rampaged through a nearby city. While Wanda was unable to sneak up upon Hawkeye, she still proved more than capable of sneaking upon the rest of the team. After setting the Hulk loose, the duo retreated as Hawkeye’s counter-attack had wounded Wanda, and the twins had otherwise done their jobs.

Ultron’s true intentions, however, soon came to light when he began to upload his consciousness into a new body. This new body was a fusion of both metal and organic tissue, essentially a cyborg body. This allowed Wanda to now read Ultron’s mind through this new partially human body. In his mind, she glimpsed a vision of the end of the Earth by cataclysmic explosion. Upon realizing Ultron’s inevitable end game, Wanda freed the scientist Dr. Cho from the mind control of Loki’s scepter, before she and Pietro made a quick retreat. Their alliance with Ultron coming to a swift end.

The guilt of what they had helped Ultron accomplish spurred Wanda and Pietro to come to the aid of Captain America in his fight with Ultron. After helping him successfully fend off Ultron and stop a derailed train, the twins warned Steve of the dangers of trusting Tony Stark with Ultron’s new body and the Infinity Gem that rested with it. Alongside Steve, the twins arrived at Avengers tower, in an attempt to stop Tony Stark and Bruce Banner from implanting Jarvis within the body. However, the twins were subdued by both Hawkeye and Bruce Banner, as Thor flew in to overload the cradle carrying Ultron’s new body with lightening. Thor’s intervention awoke Ultron’s body, which revealed itself to be a new entity that seeks to protect life rather than destroy it. Dubbed The Vision, this new entity convinced the Maximoff twins to assist the Avengers in their mission to stop Ultron’s attack on the city of Sokovia.

The twins worked with the Avengers to try and evacuate as many of the city’s civilians as they could before Ultron began his plan. He would lift the city into the air before dropping back into the Earth, simulating a meteor’s impact and ending the human race. As the city began to take flight, the twins fought alongside the Avengers against Ultron’s many bodies, doing their best to protect the innocent Sokovians still in the city. During the battle, Wanda’s nerve was shaken, as the near insurmountability of their task weighed down upon her. Compounded with the guilt she felt in having unknowingly aided Ultron in accomplishing his mission, Wanda’s confidence was almost obliterated. However, a few motivating words from Hawkeye helped her to steel her nerves, and begin the fight anew. Together with the Avengers, she and her brother repelled hundreds of Ultron’s bodies, and even managed to evacuate the remaining Sokovians as SHIELD arrived with their Helicarrier. Wanda even managed to successfully defend the trigger that would send Sokovia plummeting by herself for a little while, as Pietro and the Avengers assisted SHIELD.

However, the battle with Ultron was not without casualties. Pietro Maximoff was killed, saving Hawkeye and a Sokovian child. While Wanda did not see her twin brother’s death, she certainly felt it. Overwhelmed with the anguish and rage of losing her twin, and only other surviving family member, her powers overloaded, ripping apart all of the nearby Ultron bodies. Believing them all to be disintegrated in her telekinetic blast, Wanda left the trigger site to finish off the Ultron body that had killed her brother. Instead of choosing to head to the SHIELD lifeboats and live, Wanda choose to take her revenge upon the Ultron body, even though it would mean her death in the city’s explosion. Showing her cruelty, Wanda ripped the core out of the Ultron’s body chest, explaining how it simulated her feelings during her brother’s death.

Instead of perishing in the destruction of Sokovia, Wanda was saved by the Vision, and brought safely back to Earth to be reunited with the Avengers and the evacuated Sokovians. She was taken in by the Avengers, and brought to their new facility in upstate New York. There, Wanda would be trained by Black Widow and Captain America to be part of the new Avengers team.

Personality:

Wanda’s personality could best be described by the “survivor” moniker. She is more hardened and cold than most other girls her age due to having lived through the deaths of her parents, as well as the year of violent conflict in Sokovia. However, she is clearly not without a good conscious or desire to do good. She is capable of recognizing when she has done wrong, and she feels guilt in response. It is this moral conscious and guilt, which cause her to side with the Avengers to help stop Ultron. Despite being described as possibly freakish or abnormal due to her abilities, Wanda still identifies herself as human being, and thus does not want to see innocent human lives lost at Ultron’s hands. She even demonstrates her desire to protect innocent lives in the battle with Ultron, as she fights to not only destroy Ultron’s many bodies but also to protect the Sokovian civilians.

Having lost her parents, and now her twin brother, Wanda is very protective of those she holds dear. She desires a family, a relationship with others to fill the gap left by her family members’ passing. Thus, while Wanda is not normally a malicious person, she will not tolerate anyone hurting those she cares about.
While Wanda is not immediately distrustful of strangers, she does attempt to read the minds of everyone she meets. Only after doing so, does she seem to decide to associate and interact with others. After her time dealing with Ultron, however, it is unlikely that Wanda is going to be at all trustful of robots or individuals with obvious mechanical parts.

Wanda still demonstrates personality traits that could possibly attributed to most girls her age. She clearly has a fondness for fashion, as all of her outfits lean more towards atheistic than practical functionality. She is, after all, the only one in a dress and leather jacket during the battle with Ultron. Yet, this doesn’t mean that she is a princess. She clearly values the lives of others and defeating of her enemies over the preservation of her clothing.

Overall, Wanda recognizes that she is not a completely normal person. She has experienced too many hardships in life, and possesses superhuman abilities that many would find alarming or disturbing. Yet, she still desires a fairly normal life. She clearly desires positive social relationships with others, and a place to call home. Moreso now than ever before.

Abilities:

Wanda Maximoff (a.k.a. The Scarlet Witch) has several unique—some might say “freaky” or “weird” abilities involving mental energy and manipulation. So far, she seems to possess the abilities of telekinesis, mind reading, barrier creation, and hypnotization. Her hypnosis ability seems to specifically work in regards to her target’s fears; that is, she can mentally ensnare them in a vision, where the target experiences their deepest fear or regret. At this point, she seems to have a significant degree of control over her abilities; however, should she experience an intense emotional state, then her powers will overload.

[Wanda bolted up in her cot. Breathing heavily, she placed a trembling hand on her chest to try and calm herself.]

These nightmares… Pietro… will they ever go away?

[She whispered the words, tears starting to well up in her eyes. She quickly wiped them aside with the back of her hand, refusing to give them the chance to fall down her cheeks. She took a few deep breaths, and then felt it best to take a small walk before attempting to return to sleep.]

[She slid as noiselessly as possible out of the ship’s sleeping quarters, careful to try and keep from waking any of her fellow crew members. When she first arrived in the fleet, she used to wake up screaming. She hadn’t done that since she was much littler. She felt foolish. She was a grown woman now, too old for such childish outbursts. She knew that her crewmates were understanding and willing to provide comfort, but she had caused them enough trouble for the time being. And after all, this was not something that mere words from a few sympathetic strangers would cure.]

[She stopped briefly in her stride and clucked her tongue. She was trying to not be so critical of the shipmates and other fleet-members she had met thus far. Despite her initial somber, melancholy behavior, they had shown her kindness. Calling them strangers seemed a disservice. However, they were still strange individuals… people gathered here out of time and space… Then again, she wasn’t exactly one to judge others over “strangeness.” Wanda resumed her pace, and headed for the ship’s food storage. Perhaps a small snack would help?]

It’s only been a few days since my arrival, but… it shouldn’t be that hard to find something edible on this tin can.

[She sighed as her thoughts drifted back to her last moments on Earth before she had suddenly found herself on an alien spaceship. The Avengers… would they look for her? Could any of them even find her? She supposed Thor could. He was, after all, not from Earth, but from Asgard. Still… would any of them even care that she was missing? Sure, she had fought alongside them, and together they had managed to defeat Ultron. Yet, she still hurt them. Ultron had used her to try and tear them apart. It wouldn’t surprise her if they had just written her off as another casualty… along with her brother…]

Pietro…

[As she said his name again, she could feel more tears coming. She wiped them aside too. She had already done her mourning. No amount of tears would bring her brother back.]

I truly am without a home now…

[She vocalized the thought. Hoping it would leave her mouth and then evaporate into the air, leaving her thoughts for good. She sighed. A foolish notion… She turned her attention back to searching for food. She found a packet of candy and tore it open.]

Well, at least this place has chocolate.
